InterStream Transit Keys (ISTKs) use a public key infrastructure (PKI) to secure bottlenecks inside last mile networks. The keys are temporary, or “one-time” use, lasting only the length of a single stream block/session to ensure network integrity and security on a granular level. By using a key management system embedded within the body of network equipment hardware, the network operator maintains complete control over their ISTKs (as these do not need to be shared with any outside parties).
nuMetra’s Secure Mediation Controller (SMC) manages the use of ISTKs as per mediation policies established by the network operator. Streams may be blocked and ISTKs may not be granted to a sender if the bottlenecks lack sufficient capacity for the stream as per rules set by mediation policies. In the case of the InterStream MediaGrid, ISPs must insure that their Stream Blocking Probability (SBP) remains below the InterStream-designated maximum threshold in order to uphold to the “InterStream standard” and, thus, certified and permitted to use the Association’s service mark.
As operator of the InterStream Transit Key Registry, nuMetra serves as a secure traffic clearinghouse for the Internet by using a simple lock and key system to mediate bottlenecks and increase stability across this “network of networks”.
